Why other counters get it wrong
A plain counter counts every character as 1. X uses a weighted count from its open-source twitter-text library. Characters from common scripts, plus spaces, punctuation and line breaks, count as 1. Most other characters count as 2, which covers CJK text and emoji. X also swaps every link for a 23-character t.co link, whether the original is 12 characters or 120.
This counter follows the same rules, so the number you see here should match the ring in X's composer. It spots links written with http:// or https:// and bare domains on common endings like .com or .io. A link on an unusual domain ending, typed without http, may be counted as plain text.
